Balancing Work and Parenting: Navigating Joint Custody
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City child custody attorney Dillan Savage of Wirth Law Office. I practice primarily out of the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma area. Today we are going to be discussing whether or not you, as a parent, can request joint custody in a situation where you have a highly demanding job.
In the event that you have a highly demanding job, obviously that will affect the amount of time that you can spend with your child. However, what we call that is custodial time, which is different than custody. Custody involves your ability to be made aware of major life-changing events such as doctor’s appointments, schools, religion, extracurriculars, and a few others.
The Importance of Co-Parenting
So in the event that you have joint custody, you should be made aware and make the other party aware of those big events. Both of you should work together to come to a mutually agreeable situation for the best interest of the minor child or children. Your highly demanding schedule is not going to affect whether or not you should have joint custody.
It ultimately comes down to whether or not you are a good parent and whether or not it is in the best interest of the children that you have joint custody. Lastly, whether or not you and the other party are willing to work together to co-parent is crucial. To summarize, yes, you can request joint custody even with a highly demanding work schedule or just a highly demanding schedule in general.
