Understanding Bigamy and Its Consequences
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City attorney Dillan Savage of Wirth Law Office. Today I’m going to be defining what bigamy is and what will happen if the state of Oklahoma charges you with it and finds you guilty of committing bigamy.
So bigamy is being married to two individuals at the same time. Most of the time you will see this occur when an individual is divorced and then quickly remarries, whether or not in the state of Oklahoma or out of the state of Oklahoma, and then returns to the state.
The Legal Waiting Period in Oklahoma
There is a waiting period of six months after a divorce for individuals to get remarried in the state of Oklahoma. So it can happen by accident if an individual is unaware of that waiting period. If you knowingly marry two individuals, of course, that is outright bigamy.
Now if you are found to have committed bigamy and you are charged by the state of Oklahoma and found guilty of it, that charge is going to be a felony. You can face time in a state penitentiary for no less than one year but up to three years, but no more than three years.
Avoiding the Risks of Bigamy
If you get your divorce, just wait six months. It is not worth ignoring that waiting period time and risking a felony charge. If you are trying to be married to two individuals, just don’t do that. I mean, it’s just not worth the felony charge in the event the state of Oklahoma decides to charge you with it.
Again, it’s a felony you could face up to three years in a state penitentiary for. It’s just not worth it. If you found this video to be helpful or you believe it could help someone else, please go to theoklahomacityattorney.com.
