Ensuring Women’s Rights Remain Unchanged After Marriage
Today, we’re discussing the rights of women after marriage, something that, while seemingly self-explanatory today, is still worth addressing. Hi, I’m Oklahoma City family lawyer Dillan Savage, and I practice primarily in the Oklahoma City area at Wirth Law Office.
A woman’s legal rights as an individual do not change upon marriage. While this is widely understood in modern times, it wasn’t always the case throughout history.
The Legal Framework for Women’s Rights
To ensure that this principle is clear, Oklahoma codified it in Title 43, Section 214, under the section titled Rights of Married Women. The law specifically states that women retain the same legal existence and personality after marriage as they did before marriage.
This means that marriage does not diminish a woman’s rights or change her legal standing. She remains fully entitled to her legal rights, identity, and autonomy throughout the marriage.
