Understanding Child Support During Deployment
Hello, I’m Oklahoma City family attorney Dillan Savage of Wirth Law Office in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Today, we’re revisiting a topic I’ve covered before: the ability of the court and parties to request certain orders when a parent is deploying. During a deployment, there are protections for the deploying parent, and many custody matters are temporarily paused. However, there are circumstances where the custodial arrangement for the child can be modified temporarily until the deployed parent returns and resumes their visitation or custody time.
Temporary Modifications and Additional Benefits
This isn’t limited to just custodial changes. It can also involve temporary modifications to child support or even requests for the child to receive additional benefits, such as life insurance policies, through the deployed parent’s military service.
You can refer to Title 43, Sections 150.6 and 150.7 for more details. If a parent is deployed, temporary changes to custodial time and child support are possible. Typically, the custodial parent may receive increased child support to accommodate their higher burden, and the child may be eligible for additional benefits from the military.
